This position is a hybrid role with approximately 2 days per week minimum expected in the office. It would therefore be preferable for you to be within commuting distance of Manchester or be looking to relocate to the Manchester area.

Additional travel will be required to attend meetings and events across the UK. Occasional overnight stays will be required.

Main responsibilities of the role:

The role requires excellent project management skills to ensure high levels of project participation, data integrity, appropriate analysis, and meaningful insight. The delivery of all projects is underpinned by proactive and responsive stakeholder engagement to ensure delivery of the agreed project scope.

You will be engaged in a range of activities leading and managing the development and delivery of healthcare benchmarking and other types of improvement projects including:

  • Project design
    • Developing proposals and specifications for meet members’ project needs in line with current policy, practice and other relevant literature.
    • Identifying metrics and designing the data collection templates.
    • Designing the process of data collection including stakeholder engagement events, clear data collection protocols, ensuring high levels of participation including monitoring and escalation processes to ensure reliable and valid data.
  • Analysis
    • Develop and agree an analysis plan with colleagues
    • Utilise standard (e.g. Excel) and bespoke software packages to validate, analyse and visualise data accurately and meaningfully.
  • Interpretation
    • Ability to distil key messages from the data within the wider context of NHS policy and practice and other relevant literature.
  • Dissemination
    • Ability to convey complex data in simple terms both written and orally, for diverse audiences.

Essential Skills

Education

  • Educated to degree level with a minimum BA/BSc 2:2 in psychology or other social sciences, applied physical sciences, applied maths, social work, social care, or any other related field.

Project management

  • Experience of project management and ability to demonstrate application of project management skills in the successful delivery of projects.
  • Proven ability to use initiative to efficiently plan, optimise and progress project and communicate findings to a high standard and within tight timescales.

Communication

  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills that enable you to collaborate well with multi-disciplinary teams across the business and with a wide range of external stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to confidently engage with senior management and members/stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to present with confidence and clarity to different audiences.
  • Proven skills in searching for, summarising and presenting evidence, e.g. policy, guidance, key literature.
  • Excellent written skills and proven ability to write reports and other outputs that convey data clearly, distil key messages and provide meaningful intelligence for stakeholders.

Analytical skills

  • Highly numerate with excellent analytical skills.
  • Experience of working with data to inform improvement initiatives, e.g. managing data in a database, data validation, data analysis, data visualisation.
  • Proven ability to interrogate and synthesize data into usable intelligence for stakeholders to implement within the delivery of health services or related settings.

Technical skills

  • Excellent IT skills including fluency with all Microsoft packages, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness to work flexibly and adaptably.

Desirable Skills:

  • High level degree, e.g. MA, MSc, PhD, or professional development qualifications relevant to health and care settings.
  • Experience of conducting and successfully completing quality improvement, applied research, or similar types of projects.
  • Experience of working in healthcare research or improvement / NHS or other healthcare setting with a focus on using data for service improvement.
  • Strong excel skills and experience of using other analytical and statistical packages such as R.

What we do:

The Network work programme comprises a wide range of benchmarking and improvement projects on topics of interest to all members. The work we undertake falls within one of four sectors: community (physical health) services, acute services, mental health, learning disability and autism services, whole system working (e.g. integrated care systems). We are also commissioned to undertake bespoke work for member organisations. These bespoke projects cover a range of topics such as a deep dive on a particular patient cohort or service pathway; understanding areas of improvement such as reducing inequalities, additional targeted data collection to enhance insight on specific areas of interest, and system overviews of service delivery to supported integrated working.

The Network programme is governed by a Steering Group representative of all sectors across which we work. Sector specific Reference Groups provide expert advice and guidance on the projects within specific sector areas. Additionally, the Network actively seeks feedback and opportunities throughout the programme cycle to engage with members to ensure maximum benefit and value for our members.

In addition to our member benchmarking programme, the Network also delivers two wider programmes of work:

  1. A Workforce Programme. Commissioned by NHS England Workforce, Training, and Education Directorate (formerly Health Education England), this programme is focussed on delivering comprehensive workforce projects across the healthcare sector in England. Current projects include Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Services workforce, Peer Support Workers, Psychological Professions, Talking Therapies workforce, Children and Young People’s Mental Health Services workforce, and the Drugs and Alcohol workforce. These projects provide intelligence to support delivery against national targets on key workforce areas including training, retention and growth as outlined in the NHS Workforce Plan and other key policy documents, e.g. national drug strategy for England.
  2. A National Clinical Audit Programme. Commissioned by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP), the Audit team work collaboratively with system partners and stakeholders to deliver national clinical audits including CVDPREVENT and the National Audit of Care at the End of Life (NACEL). Further, NHS England has directly commissioned the delivery of the sixth year of the Learning Disability Improvement Standards Project in 2023/24.
